Is my power supply enough?

Hello everyone , i just build a new pc and it is making noises ( like the old HDD when thy search for folders ) , first i thought it is the HDD , but then i opened my case to find the sound coming from behind the processor cooler , the only thing that i can think of is that the noise is coming from the processor , some told me that it might be that psu is not enough , so here is my pc , and thank you for helping:





mother board : asus sabertooth x58

processor: i7-960

power supply : silver stone 500w sst-st5df-e5

graphic card: nvidia geforce GTX550TI

HDD: 1 tera , dont remember name of it

RAM :2 mushkin 4 gb each

windows 7 - 64 bit|||hey buddy! well i wouldnt risk it...



the 960 is a pretty high power consuming cpu....taking up to 130 watts....and then you have your GPU which would go to 200watts or even more! and then you have your HDD....and i dont know what USB devices you are oging to have with it etc....so yea...i mean its compatible sure but if you are going to have toher stuff plugged into it you could have issues and IF you are going to upgrade it in the future you can forget it....because you will be very likely be needing a new PSU :)



however good luck!!|||im sooo sorry , i had a bad info that its a cpu activity light , now i know its The Hard Drive Activity light , i had an old hdd that was making the same noise , so is it possible its the HDD? and im defiantly getting a new psu , no fan is making any noise i was strict in choosing em .

|||beside the noise only start withe The Hard Drive Activity light , its not always on , checked screws everything is fine , any idia how to check if its the HDD , and if it is do i have to replace it ? btw hdd is : wd 1002faex 1tb , thanks for the help

|||All a processor is basically just a bunch of transistors, and transistors don't make sound. It's likely to be either a fan (PSU, CPU, case, or graphics card?), or your hard disk. If it's a fan, then there usually isn't much to worry about - it's probably just spinning at a higher rate than usual. If it's a very strange sound, then perhaps the blades are catching onto something.



EDIT: Oh, and if it's your hard disk, then it's probably beginning to die.|||What light in the case? The Hard Drive Activity light? I know of no light which will light up when the processor is working. If you know of one let me know i would love to get one for my self.

That powersupply is cutting it close as far as available power, you be much better off with a 600 to 700 watt PSU.

It does sound to me like your hard drive is the guilty culprit.. Could it be that its just not secured properly and causing something else to vibrate?

Check all your screws including your CPU mounts.
